Ride through the far north of Madagascar, taking in volcanic massifs, sacred lakes, and unique forest reserves near Antsiranana (Diego Suarez). The route combines challenging climbs near the Amber Mountain foothills with sweeping coastal descents.
Access. Fly into Antsiranana (Diego Suarez), where local cycling guides and mountain bike rentals can be arranged through regional tour operators.
Notes. Dry season from May to November is ideal. Watch out for strong coastal winds and remote stretches with limited services.
Isalo Massif Gravel Trails

Explore the rugged sandstone canyons, deep gorges, and grassy plateaus of Isalo on remote gravel tracks and red-dirt trails. Cyclists navigate ancient geological formations and dramatic savanna landscapes with endemic ring-tailed lemurs nearby.
Access. Accessible via the RN7 highway to Ranohira, where local guides and park-approved excursions can be organized. High-clearance support vehicles are recommended for remote sectors.
Notes. Hot conditions year-round; best ridden during the dry season (May to October). Technical terrain demands gravel or mountain bikes with sturdy tires.
Nosy Boraha (Ile Sainte-Marie) Coastal Loop

Circumnavigate a lush tropical island on sandy tracks, red dirt roads, and quiet coastal paths shaded by coconut palms. Riders pass hidden pirate coves, quiet fishing villages, and tranquil lagoons with turquoise waters.
Access. Reach the island via a short flight or ferry from Mahambo on the eastern mainland. Bicycle rentals are available in Ambodifotatra, the main town.
Notes. Best during the dry months from September to December. Tracks can become very muddy during the rainy season; suitable for gravel or mountain bikes.
RN7 Central Highlands Traverse

Tackle the iconic Route Nationale 7 from Antananarivo through the cool, rolling central highlands down to Fianarantsoa. Riders encounter terraced rice paddies, traditional red-brick highland villages, and dramatic granite escarpments along a challenging paved route.
Access. Fly into Antananarivo where bike-packing tours and support vehicles can be arranged. Local bike shops are scarce outside the capital, making self-supported touring or organized logistics essential.
Notes. Best from April to November during the dry season. Traffic can be heavy with bush taxis near towns; steep climbs require good fitness. E-bike support is rare outside guided groups.
