Cycling in Kenya
Including Aberdare Mountain Range, Diani Beach and South Coast, and Great Rift Valley Escarpment. On the map.
The vibe
Pedaling through the Rift Valley involves sharing unpaved red-earth tracks with wildlife, livestock, and heavily loaded transport trucks. The cooler, dry months between June and October provide the most comfortable temperatures for long hours in the saddle. Most riding is entirely independent and self-supported, offering an intensely localized, dusty adventure where you navigate by instinct and wave to passing children.

Tackle rugged moorland tracks, dense bamboo forests, and steep timber roads across the mist-shrouded peaks of the Aberdares. This is a demanding off-road destination designed for seasoned mountain and gravel bikers.
Access. Organized tours with 4x4 support vehicles are recommended. Access is typically coordinated from Nyeri or Nyahururu.
Notes. Temperatures drop significantly at high elevations. Frequent mountain mists and muddy tracks require robust gear.

Explore the tropical Kenyan coast on quiet palm-shaded backroads, coastal coconut plantations, and coral-sand tracks. Ride alongside the Indian Ocean breeze and experience laid-back Swahili village culture.
Access. Bike rentals and guided coastal rides are widely available along Diani Beach. Accessible via Ukunda airstrip or a ferry crossing from Mombasa.
Notes. Hot and humid conditions require frequent hydration. Watch for sandy patches that can swallow thin tires.

Access. Reach Iten by road from Eldoret, which has an airport with regular flights from Nairobi. Local cycling clubs and guesthouses cater to endurance athletes.
Notes. Steep descents require reliable brakes and technical descending skills. Altitude exceeds 2,400 meters.

Access. Base yourself in Nanyuki, where mountain bikes and gravel grinders can be rented. Easily accessible by road or charter flight from Nairobi.
Notes. High altitudes can affect breathing; acclimatize properly. The weather is unpredictable, so bring rain gear.
