Cycling in Bulgaria
Including Bulgarian Black Sea Coastal Route, Danube Plain and Bulgarian Danube Bank, and Pirin and Rila Mountains Bike Parks and Trails. On the map.
The vibe
Cycling here is a test of endurance through rugged, undulating terrain that feels more like an expedition than a leisurely cruise. You are best off hitting the secondary mountain roads in the late spring or early autumn when the heat is manageable and the mountain passes are clear of snow. Expect to share the road with local traffic and the occasional tractor, as this is a country where you navigate by your own map rather than dedicated cycling infrastructure.
