The vibe
Cycling here takes you along winding roads through terraced fields, a journey that feels more like a motorbike ride than a bike holiday. Spring and autumn provide the mildest temperatures for a comfortable ride. Riders are mostly locals, so the vibe is very low-key and self-reliant.
Paro to Bumthang Road Route

This iconic road cycling route traverses the winding Himalayan highways, connecting the cultural hubs of Paro, Thimphu, and the central valleys of Bumthang. Riders tackle legendary mountain passes like Dochu La, rewarded with panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and pristine rhododendron forests.
Access. Supported tours are standard; bike rentals and mechanical support are available in Paro and Thimphu.
Notes. High-altitude riding; traffic is generally light but roads are narrow and winding.
Phobjikha Valley

A stunning glacial valley known for its gentle, wide-open terrain that provides a rare reprieve from Bhutan's steep mountain climbs. The valley features a network of farm roads and trails perfect for gravel cycling amidst the habitat of the endangered black-necked crane.
Access. Accessible via a day's drive from Punakha; local guesthouses offer bike storage and regional route advice.
Notes. Ideal for gravel bikes; best visited in late autumn when the cranes arrive.
