The vibe

Cycling here is mostly a local commuting activity, but long rides along riverbanks can be scenic. The most comfortable months are spring and autumn when temperatures are mild. Roads are shared with motor vehicles, so cyclists rely on local knowledge and the vibe is informal.

  • Bandarban Hill Tracts

    Chattogram Division

Tackle the steepest paved climbs and rugged mountain passes in Bangladesh's most dramatic highland terrain. Winding roads connect indigenous villages, deep valleys, and peaks like Tahjindong and Keokradong.

Access. Take an overnight bus from Dhaka to Bandarban. Due to remote terrain and permit requirements for certain interior zones, organized cycling tours with support vehicles are strongly advised.

Notes. Demanding road climbs with steep gradients and high physical exertion required. Check local travel restrictions before heading deep into the interior ranges.

  • Cox's Bazar Marine Drive

    Chattogram Division

Pedal along the world's longest unbroken natural sea beach on this paved coastal highway stretching south from Cox's Bazar to Teknaf. The route offers sweeping views of the Bay of Bengal on one side and green hills on the other, making it Bangladesh's premier coastal road-cycling experience.

Access. Fly to Cox's Bazar from Dhaka. Bicycle rentals and touring gear can be arranged through local adventure clubs in Cox's Bazar town. Support vehicles are recommended for the full 80-kilometer stretch.

Notes. Best ridden from November to February during the dry season. Watch out for weekend tourist traffic near the city beaches, but the southern stretches quiet down significantly.

  • Srimangal Tea Hills and Valleys

    Sylhet Division

Explore the rolling green hills and endless tea estates of Bangladesh's tea capital on tranquil gravel and dirt pathways. Cyclists weave through shaded plantation lanes, rubber gardens, and patches of Lawachara National Park.

Access. Take the intercity train or bus from Dhaka to Srimangal. Mountain bikes and hybrid cycles can be rented locally through eco-resorts and tour operators.

Notes. Hilly terrain with mixed unpaved surfaces; ideal for gravel and mountain bikes. Early morning rides offer misty landscapes and cooler temperatures.

  • Sylhet Haor Wetland Loop

    Sylhet Division

Ride across vast seasonal wetland basins on raised submersible roads that connect remote island villages during the dry season. The endless horizon of water and sky creates an otherworldly backdrop for long-distance cyclists.

Access. Base yourself in Sylhet city, accessible by air, train, or road from Dhaka. Local cycling communities frequently organize weekend group rides into the haor regions.

Notes. Completely submerged during monsoon (June-October); ride strictly between November and April when concrete tracks emerge above the water line.
