The vibe
Rock climbing involves scaling pocketed limestone cliffs that plunge directly into turquoise bays or hidden jungle interiors, a style worlds away from traditional granite cragging. It is best tackled during the cooler, drier northeast monsoon months when the grip is solid and the humidity is slightly less punishing. The scene is refreshingly DIY and tight-knit, relying on local beta and community-bolted routes rather than commercial adventure parks.
Atimonan Crags, Quezon

Nestled within the Quezon Protected Landscape, these limestone crags offer a secluded and lush climbing experience. The routes are primarily sport-bolted, ranging from beginner-friendly slabs to challenging overhanging limestone pockets.
Access. Accessible via a bus from Manila to Atimonan. The crags are located within the park, requiring a short hike through the forest. It is recommended to coordinate with the local climbing community in Manila for current access status and gear logistics.
Notes. Permits are often required by the park management. Humidity is high year-round; plan for early morning starts.
Cantabaco Crags, Cebu

Cantabaco is widely considered the premier sport climbing destination in the Philippines, featuring massive limestone cliffs with hundreds of bolted routes. The area offers a mix of technical vertical face climbing and steep, pumpy overhangs that attract international climbers.
Access. Located in Toledo City, Cebu. Climbers typically base themselves in Cebu City and take a bus or van to Toledo, followed by a short motorcycle ride to the crag. Local guides and gear information are available through the Cebu climbing community.
Notes. Best climbed from November to May to avoid the peak heat and monsoon season. The rock is sharp limestone; tape and skin care are recommended.
Montalban Crags

Situated in the limestone hills of Rodriguez, Rizal, these historic crags offer some of the most accessible and diverse sport climbing in the Manila region. Routes scale dramatic limestone walls with views overlooking the Wawa Dam gorge.
Access. A short drive and jeepney ride from Metro Manila to Barangay San Rafael, followed by a short trek to the various crag sectors.
Notes. Bring your own gear or hire local climbing guides. Avoid climbing during heavy monsoon rains due to slippery rock and loose debris.
