The vibe
Tackling the rock here feels wonderfully elemental, often leaving you exposed to dramatic alpine winds with only the sound of distant scree and rushing rivers for company. Late summer offers the driest granite and the most reliable freeze-thaw cycles on the high walls. The scene is refreshingly unpretentious and fiercely DIY, with most crags approached via unmarked sheep tracks rather than manicured tourist paths.

Wanaka is a premier hub for rock climbing, featuring extensive sport climbing crags on schist rock. The area is renowned for its high-quality routes and stunning vistas overlooking the Southern Alps.
Access. Located a short drive from Queenstown; climbing areas are accessible via well-marked trails.
