The vibe
Climbing here is about scaling sandstone walls that rise out of desert valleys, giving a sense of isolation you rarely find in crowded sport crags. Autumn offers cooler air and reliable daylight, making the routes more enjoyable. Most climbers show up with their own gear and find the crags largely self‑served, so the day feels like a DIY adventure with occasional local rope‑shop advice.

High in the High Atlas, this area is a premier bouldering destination known for its high-altitude sandstone blocks. The cool mountain air and stunning scenery make it a fantastic alternative to the desert crags.
Access. Accessible via a scenic drive from Marrakech. Best visited in the summer months when the lower elevations are too hot.
Notes. Bring your own pads as there is no local rental infrastructure. The area is also known for ancient rock carvings.
Tafraout (Anti-Atlas)

Famous for its vast landscape of quartzite boulders and massive granite domes, Tafraout is a unique destination for trad climbing and bouldering. The rock quality is excellent, and the setting in the Anti-Atlas mountains is otherworldly.
Access. Located in the south; best reached by car from Agadir. Winter is the ideal season due to the mild climate.
Notes. Trad climbing is the primary focus here, with many routes requiring traditional gear placements. The bouldering potential is vast and largely untapped.

A spectacular limestone canyon featuring hundreds of bolted sport routes on towering vertical walls. It is Morocco's premier sport climbing destination, offering everything from single-pitch testpieces to massive multi-pitch adventures.
Access. Located near Tinerhir; accessible by bus or rental car from Marrakech. Best climbed in spring or autumn to avoid extreme summer heat.
Notes. Grades range from beginner-friendly to elite. Bolting is generally good, but always check anchors on older multi-pitch routes.

A remote and rugged limestone paradise known for its massive, high-quality multi-pitch trad and sport routes. The area offers a true wilderness experience with stunning views of the High Atlas mountains.
Access. Requires a 4x4 vehicle or local transport from Beni Mellal. Best visited in late spring or early autumn.
Notes. Trad ethics are strong here; bring a full rack for the classic multi-pitch lines. Remote location requires self-sufficiency.
