Climbing in Malawi
Including Mulanje Massif. On the map.
The vibe
Climbing the sandstone outcrops offers a sense of isolation, with sweeping savanna vistas that you rarely find on crowded crags. The dry season, roughly May through September, keeps the rock dry and safe. Most climbers are self‑organised, hauling their own gear, and no permits are required.

The Mulanje Massif is a massive inselberg rising abruptly from the plains, offering high-altitude granite climbing on massive faces. It is the premier destination in Malawi for multi-pitch trad climbing, featuring long, adventurous routes on solid rock.
Access. Access is via the town of Mulanje, where climbers typically hire local guides and porters to reach the mountain huts. The best climbing season is during the dry months from May to October.
Notes. Mostly traditional climbing with limited bolting; requires self-sufficiency and navigation skills. Permits are required for entry into the Forest Reserve.
