The vibe
The limestone cliffs rise abruptly from the desert, offering a raw, exposed feel that blends rock and endless horizon. Climbing is doable most of the year, but the milder months avoid scorching heat and sandstorms. Climbers usually arrange their own logistics, setting up bivouacs and sharing routes with a handful of like‑minded adventurers.

The Tadrart Akakus range offers unique sandstone climbing in a dramatic desert landscape. Climbers travel here for the remote, otherworldly experience of scaling wind-sculpted rock formations amidst ancient petroglyphs.
Access. Access is via 4x4 expedition from Ghat. Professional desert guides are mandatory for navigation and permits. Best visited during the cooler winter months (November to February).
Notes. Trad climbing focus; requires self-sufficiency and strict adherence to local heritage protection rules. No local gear shops.
