The dry, crisp autumn months offer the crispest friction and most stable skies for vertical days. You are largely on your own out here with a tight-knit local scene, keeping the experience wonderfully raw and uncommercialised.
Shymbulak and Tuyuk-Su Gorge

The Tuyuk-Su alpine zone offers high-altitude granite and mixed climbing routes accessible from the Shymbulak mountain resort area. It is a historic hub for Soviet-style mountaineering and modern alpine technical climbing.
Access. Take the cable car from Almaty to Shymbulak, followed by a hike into the Tuyuk-Su glacier valley. Mountaineering clubs in Almaty offer guide services for technical peaks.
Notes. Requires alpine skills; best season is July to September.
Tamgaly Tas

Located along the Ili River, this is the premier sport climbing destination in Kazakhstan. The area features numerous limestone crags with hundreds of bolted routes ranging from beginner to advanced, set against a backdrop of ancient petroglyphs.
Access. Accessible by a 3-hour drive from Almaty. Best visited in spring or autumn to avoid the intense summer heat. Local climbing clubs in Almaty provide beta and gear rental.
Notes. Mostly single-pitch sport routes; ethics are well-established with modern bolting.
