Climbing in Ghana

Including Boti Falls Gorge, Mount Afadjato and Agumatsa Range, and Shai Hills Resource Reserve. On the map.

The vibe

Climbing is not a developed activity here, as the terrain consists mostly of weathered outcrops rather than established sport crags. There is no infrastructure for this, and you would be entirely on your own if you sought out rock faces. It is a niche pursuit for the truly self-sufficient traveler who is comfortable navigating remote, unmapped geology.

  • Boti Falls Gorge

The gorge surrounding Boti Falls and the nearby umbrella rock formations feature dramatic sandstone and crystalline rock cliffs. Climbers explore the steep valley walls and river boulders for adventurous deep-water soloing concepts and bouldering lines. It is a scenic destination for climbers seeking technical movement in a lush forested gorge.

Access. Located near Koforidua in the Eastern Region, about a 2.5-hour drive from Accra. Access involves hiking down into the river valley from the main tourism complex.

Notes. Water levels in the gorge fluctuate significantly between the wet and dry seasons; check conditions before attempting riverbed problems.

  • Mount Afadjato and Agumatsa Range

    Volta Region

As part of the Akwapim-Togo range near the Togo border, the steep quartzite slopes and rocky bluffs around Mount Afadjato provide rugged alpine-style hiking and steep scrambling. While primarily known for trekking, the surrounding highlands offer rugged rock faces and steep ridges for adventurous outdoor climbers. The sheer scale of the upland terrain attracts mountain enthusiasts.

Access. Located in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region, about a 4-hour drive from Accra. Base yourself in Gbledi Gborgame and hike via local community guides.

Notes. Local community guides are mandatory for entering the range. Bring self-sufficient gear as there is no climbing infrastructure.

  • Shai Hills Resource Reserve

    Greater Accra Region

Shai Hills features weathered gneiss and granite inselbergs rising out of the coastal plains, offering a developing bouldering and low-crag climbing scene. Climbers travel here to explore scattered rock formations and slabs just north of Accra. The area provides unique friction climbing on ancient stone surrounded by savanna wildlife.

Access. Located about an hour's drive northeast of Accra. Approach is via the main park gates with short walks to the rocky outcrops. Best visited during the cooler dry season months from November to February.

Notes. Entrance fees apply for the reserve. Bring all your own bouldering pads and gear as there are no local climbing shops.
