The vibe
The rock here is raw and unpolished, offering a rugged, pioneering experience far removed from the manicured crags of the west. Winter months provide the most stable temperatures for spending long days on the stone. It is a deeply DIY endeavor where you bring your own gear and local knowledge is the only real access key.
Ankober Escarpment

Located on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, the Ankober escarpment provides massive basalt cliffs with significant vertical relief. It is a rugged destination for experienced climbers looking for remote, adventurous trad routes with panoramic views of the Ethiopian highlands.
Access. Accessible via a drive from Addis Ababa to the historic town of Ankober. Climbers must be fully self-sufficient with gear and logistics as the area lacks formal climbing infrastructure.
Notes. Remote, high-altitude environment. Requires careful route finding and solid trad skills.
Gheralta Mountains

The Gheralta range features dramatic sandstone spires and plateaus that offer unique multi-pitch trad climbing in a high-desert environment. Climbers visit for the striking vertical faces and the cultural experience of reaching ancient rock-hewn churches perched on cliff edges.
Access. Access is via the town of Hawzen or Wukro in the Tigray region. Visitors should hire local guides familiar with the terrain and bring their own full trad rack, as there are no local gear rental shops.
Notes. Trad climbing only; ethics emphasize respect for the sacred sites. Best season is October to March to avoid extreme heat and the rainy season.
