The vibe
Climbing here is an exercise in raw, sun-baked exploration on limestone faces that feel entirely removed from the manicured crags of Europe. The winter season is the only realistic time to climb, as the rock becomes too hot to touch for most of the year. It is a niche pursuit where you are largely responsible for your own gear and logistics, making it feel like a rugged, independent adventure.
St. Katherine Granite Mountains

Rising out of the Sinai desert, these remote granite domes and towering walls offer exceptional trad and exploratory climbing in a biblical landscape. Climbers travel here for multi-pitch traditional routes on golden, friction-heavy granite set against deep desert silence.
Access. Fly to Sharm el-Sheikh, then take a taxi or bus north into the mountains to the town of St. Katherine. Best climbed from October through April to avoid extreme summer desert heat.
Notes. Local Bedouin guides are essential for navigating approaches and respecting tribal lands. Bring all your own traditional gear and water.
Wadi Degla Protectorate
Cairo

Located just on the outskirts of Cairo, this protected limestone canyon provides accessible local cragging with short approaches. It features pocketed limestone walls with a mix of sport routes and traditional lines favoured by the local climbing community.
Access. Easily reached via taxi or car from central Cairo within 30 to 45 minutes. Best visited during the cooler winter months from November to March.
Notes. Entry fee applies to the protectorate. Bring plenty of water as there are no amenities inside the canyon.
Wadi Gnai, Dahab

Located in the mountains behind Dahab, Wadi Gnai offers a concentration of high-quality granite sport routes. It is the primary destination for climbers visiting the Sinai Peninsula seeking bolted limestone and granite crags.
Access. Accessible via a short drive from Dahab. Local climbing guides based in Dahab can provide transport and gear rental for the approach.
Notes. Best climbed from October to April to avoid extreme summer heat.
