The vibe
The rock here is jagged and sun-baked, offering a raw, unpolished experience that feels more like an expedition than a sport. Climbing is best pursued in the winter when the intense desert heat subsides enough to touch the stone. It is a completely quiet, self-reliant endeavor with no established climbing community or infrastructure to speak of.
Day Forest Volcanic Crags
Tadjourah
Rising out of the arid landscape, the ancient juniper forests of Goda contain basalt and volcanic rock formations that offer adventurous exploratory climbing. It provides rugged trad and scrambling routes for self-reliant climbers looking for untouched rock in East Africa.
Access. Access is via 4WD from Tadjourah or directly from Djibouti City up into the Goda Mountains. Climbers must bring all their own gear, as there are no local climbing shops or rental facilities.
Notes. Exploratory climbing scene with no fixed protection; bring your own trad rack and comprehensive safety kit.
