Climbing in Democratic Republic of the Congo
Including Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Stanley (Ruwenzori Mountains). On the map.
The vibe
There is no established sport climbing scene here, as the focus remains entirely on the rugged, volcanic landscape rather than vertical rock faces. The sheer logistical difficulty of reaching the high-altitude crags makes this an impractical destination for anyone seeking a traditional climbing trip.

A world-renowned destination for adventurous climbers, this active stratovolcano offers unique volcanic rock climbing opportunities on its crater rim. Climbers visit to experience the raw power of the lava lake while navigating challenging high-altitude terrain.
Access. Access is via Goma, with mandatory guided expeditions organized through the Virunga National Park authorities. Climbers must secure permits in advance and travel with specialized mountain guides.
Notes. High-altitude environment; requires extreme caution due to volcanic activity and sulfurous gases. Climbing is strictly regulated by park authorities.

Located on the border of the DRC and Uganda, the Ruwenzori range offers some of the most challenging alpine climbing in Africa. Climbers travel here to tackle the technical rock and glaciated ridges of Margherita Peak.
Access. Expeditions typically start from the Ugandan side, but the range is accessible for technical climbing routes that cross into the DRC. Requires professional high-altitude mountain guides and multi-day approach treks.
Notes. Requires full alpine gear, crampons, and ice axes. The weather is notoriously wet and unpredictable; best climbed during the dry seasons.
