The vibe
Rock faces in Armenia offer steep basalt walls etched with ancient carvings, a quieter alternative to crowded crag hubs. The Bazum range offers high-altitude cragging and potential for alpine-style rock climbing. It is visited by climbers seeking solitude and longer, more rugged routes in a mountainous environment.
Access. Accessible via the city of Vanadzor, which serves as the primary base for exploring the surrounding peaks and crags.
Notes. Requires a more adventurous approach; climbers should be prepared for variable mountain weather.
Haghpat Canyon

Situated in the lush Debed Canyon, this area offers a mix of basalt and limestone climbing. It is a developing destination that attracts climbers looking for adventurous multi-pitch sport routes in a verdant, canyon-side setting.
Access. The area is located near the Haghpat Monastery, accessible from the town of Alaverdi. It is best visited during the summer months when the higher altitude provides cooler temperatures.
Notes. Some routes require a trad rack, but the majority are sport-bolted. Check with local Armenian climbing forums for current route development status.
Noravank Canyon

Noravank is the premier sport climbing destination in Armenia, featuring towering red limestone walls with hundreds of bolted routes. Climbers travel here for the unique combination of high-quality vertical rock and the stunning backdrop of medieval monastery architecture.
Access. Located near the town of Yeghegnadzor, the crags are easily accessible by car from Yerevan. Local climbing clubs in Yerevan provide route information and occasional gear rental.
Notes. Best climbed in spring and autumn to avoid extreme summer heat. Most routes are well-bolted sport lines.
