The vibe
Laos is entirely landlocked, meaning saltwater coasts and sandy shores simply do not exist here. Travelers looking for coastal relaxation will find none of the typical oceanfront atmosphere. Instead of beaches, visitors trade saltwater for slow-moving riverbanks and landlocked tranquility.
Don Khon River Beach, Si Phan Don

Located along the Mekong River in the 4,000 Islands archipelago, this seasonal river beach offers a unique freshwater swimming experience. The soft sand banks emerge during the dry season, providing a tranquil spot to relax amidst the lush tropical scenery of southern Laos.
Access. Accessible by boat from the mainland at Ban Nakasang; the beach is a short walk or bicycle ride from the main village on Don Khon.
Notes. The beach is only present during the dry season (typically November to April) when river levels recede.

Situated near the entrance of the famous Kong Lor Cave, this river beach provides a stunning setting with turquoise water and soft sand. It is an ideal place to swim after exploring the massive limestone cave system.
Access. Accessible by road from Thakhek; the beach is a short walk from the village and cave entrance.

This expansive reservoir features sandy stretches along its shoreline that serve as a popular weekend retreat for locals and travelers alike. The calm, clear water and surrounding forested hills create a serene environment perfect for swimming and lakeside relaxation.
Access. Located about 90km north of Vientiane, it is easily reached by car or bus; the beach areas are accessible via the various resorts and public access points near Thalat.
Nam Ou River Beach, Muang Ngoy

This scenic riverside stretch features golden sand banks set against a dramatic backdrop of limestone karst mountains. It is a favorite spot for travelers to relax and swim in the slow-moving, clear waters of the Nam Ou River.
Access. Accessible only by boat from Nong Khiaw; the beach is located directly in front of the main village.
Tad Lo River Beach, Bolaven Plateau
