The vibe
Kazakhstan is landlocked, so coastal beach culture is replaced by vast, salty inland lakes and sprawling reservoir shores that feel more like open desert oceans. High summer brings hot, dry weather ideal for lakeside camping and swimming under wide, empty skies. Most spots are totally DIY and wild, shared mostly with local families rather than resort crowds.

Located along the Caspian Sea, Blue Bay is famous for its striking turquoise waters and dramatic limestone cliffs. It offers a unique, rugged swimming experience far from the typical sandy resort aesthetic.
Access. Accessible by 4x4 vehicle from Aktau; it is a remote destination requiring a local guide or private transport.
Notes. The terrain is rocky and steep; swimming requires caution due to the lack of lifeguards and facilities.
Kapchagay Reservoir, Almaty Region

This massive man-made reservoir serves as the primary summer beach getaway for residents of Almaty. The northern shores feature sandy areas and warm water, perfect for swimming and sunbathing during the hot steppe summer.
Access. Easily accessible by car or bus from Almaty; the area is lined with numerous private beach clubs and public access points.
Notes. The area can get very crowded on summer weekends; water levels can fluctuate.
Kenderli Beach, Mangystau

Kenderli is a long, sweeping stretch of golden sand on the Caspian coast, often referred to as the 'Kazakhstani Riviera'. The water is shallow and calm, making it a popular spot for summer relaxation.
Access. Located near Zhanaozen; reachable by car, though the road can be challenging, making it a destination for adventurous travelers.
Notes. Limited infrastructure; visitors should bring their own supplies and shade.
