The vibe
The coastline here meets the heavy discharge of massive rivers, creating churning, mud-stained shores rather than turquoise swimming strands. Locals visit packed stretches near the capital for sea breezes and snack shacks, but these are not resort shores for sunbathing. It feels raw and elemental, best experienced during the drier months when the mudflats harden slightly underfoot.

The southern section of the same protected coastline, with soft shell‑laden sand and shallow, turquoise‑tinged waters ideal for wading and sunset watching.
Access. Reachable via the same Barima‑Waini airstrip; a short boat ride downstream the Barima River drops you at the southern landing point.
Notes. Tide can expose extensive mudflats; bring sturdy footwear for the shell surface.
