The vibe
The coastline here feels raw and untamed, defined by crashing Atlantic surf and wide stretches of palm-fringed sand that feel worlds away from manicured resorts. You will find the most comfort during the drier months when the sun stays out and the humidity drops, making long walks along the shore much more pleasant. It is a largely DIY experience where you might share the horizon with local fishing boats rather than crowds of sunbathers.

Situated where the mighty Volta River meets the Atlantic Ocean, Ada Beach offers a unique coastal landscape of endless golden sandbars and calm estuary swimming waters. It is a haven for water sports, boat cruises, and tranquil beach relaxation.
Access. About a two-hour drive east of Accra, accessible by car followed by a short boat crossing to the sandbars.
Notes. Strong river and ocean currents where the Volta meets the sea; swim in designated calmer zones.
Axim Beach, Western Region

Axim Beach boasts wide expanses of pristine golden sand backed by coconut palms and historic colonial-era forts overlooking the bay. The calm cove areas offer fantastic swimming conditions in clear tropical waters.
Access. Located further west along the coast near the Ivory Coast border, accessible via road transport from Takoradi.

Busua Beach is a scenic, crescent-shaped bay known for its golden sand, gentle surf, and crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and learning to surf. It provides a relaxed, palm-fringed tropical getaway far from the bustling capital.
Access. Reached via a day trip from Takoradi or a multi-hour drive from Accra, with several eco-lodges and resorts directly on the sand.

Access. Accessible by a 30-to-45-minute taxi or tro-tro ride southwest of Accra down the coastal road.
Notes. Currents can be strong; swimmers should exercise caution.
