The vibe
The coast here feels raw and unpolished, where pebble shores meet the moody, dark waters of the sea rather than the manicured resorts found elsewhere. Summer is the only time the water warms enough for a proper swim, though the shoreline remains a place for quiet reflection even when the sun is high. You will find a mix of local families and travelers, but the atmosphere stays unhurried and largely DIY.
Kvariati Beach

Kvariati is widely considered the cleanest swimming spot near Batumi, where the deep blue Black Sea meets the steep slopes of the Adjara mountains. It is a favorite for travelers seeking a quieter atmosphere and deeper, clearer water than the northern city beaches.
Access. Located a short drive south of Batumi; accessible by public transport or private car. It features several beachfront bars and restaurants.
Notes. The beach is entirely pebbled; depths increase relatively quickly.
Shekvetili Beach

Famous for its unique magnetic black sand, Shekvetili offers a wide, pine-fringed shoreline that feels worlds away from the pebbly beaches of the south. The water is shallow and calm, making it an ideal destination for a relaxing swim in a serene, natural setting.
Access. Accessible by train or car along the coast between Kobuleti and Ureki. The area is well-developed with modern resorts and public facilities.
Notes. The sand is naturally dark/magnetic, which is a unique geological feature of this region.
