The vibe

The dry season from June to September offers the most pleasant temperatures for walking the long, empty stretches of shore.

Access. Accessible by road from Libreville via a roughly one-hour drive north. Local guesthouses and restaurants sit near the main beach access points.

An utterly wild and iconic African coastline where unbroken golden sands meet the Atlantic surf, famously known as the place where elephants and hippos wander onto the beach. The dramatic interplay of lagoon, forest, and ocean creates a breathtaking and unforgettable shore experience.
Access. Reached via domestic flight to Gamba followed by a boat transfer into the national park, or by 4x4 expeditions. Guided access is standard.
Notes. Remote wilderness area; swimming requires caution due to strong surf and resident wildlife.
Mayumba National Park Beach

A pristine, remote strip of white-sand and golden shore stretching for miles between the ocean and the lagoon in southern Gabon. It stands out as one of the most important leatherback sea turtle nesting sites in the world, flanked by untouched tropical scenery.
Access. Accessible via 4x4 vehicle from Mayumba town or specialized eco-tourism boat charters.
Notes. Strict conservation guidelines apply during turtle nesting season.
Pointe Denis Beach

A sweeping expanse of golden sand where the dense equatorial forest meets the calm waters of the Gabon Estuary. It is the premier weekend escape from Libreville, offering a wide, usable shoreline backed by coconut palms and rustic beach lodges.
Access. Easily reached via a 30-minute speedboat or ferry ride from Libreville across the estuary. A short 4x4 transfer brings you to the ocean side.
Notes. Sea turtles frequently nest on these shores between November and February; exercise caution and respect nesting areas.
