Soar over towering sea cliffs and terraced banana plantations with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean on the island of Madeira. Launch sites near Calheta and Ponta do Sol offer dramatic coastal flights and reliable thermals.
Access. Easily reached via coastal roads from Funchal. Tandem flights and site briefings are available through local island clubs.
Notes. Microclimates require careful wind assessment; coastal rotor zones demand experienced pilot control.
Paiva River

Renowned as one of the cleanest and most dynamic rivers in Europe, the Paiva River delivers continuous Class III and IV whitewater rapids. Rafting trips navigate deep gorges and dramatic river bends set within a protected green valley.
Access. Operated by licensed whitewater companies based near Arouca or Alvarenga. Spring and early summer offer the most reliable flows.
Notes. Technical rapids require adherence to strict guide instructions and proficient paddling skills.
Portalegre and Serra de São Mamede

Rising sharply above the rolling plains of the Alentejo, the Serra de São Mamede provides exceptional thermal soaring and ridge-flying conditions. Paragliders enjoy expansive cross-country flights over medieval hilltop towns and cork forests.
Access. Launch sites are accessible via mountain roads from Portalegre. Best flying conditions occur from spring through autumn.
Notes. Thermal turbulence can be strong during hot summer afternoons; intermediate pilot rating recommended.
