Adventure in Bhutan

Including Mo Chhu River and Phobjikha Valley. On the map.

The vibe

Adventure here blends white-water rafting, zip-lining, and trekking in a rugged, remote setting. The optimal months are spring and autumn when rivers are calm and weather is mild. Many packages are available, yet there is still space for independent exploration.

The Mo Chhu (Mother River) in Punakha is the premier destination for whitewater rafting in Bhutan, winding past the historic Punakha Dzong. The river offers a mix of gentle rapids and scenic stretches, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced rafters seeking a cultural adventure.

Access. Located near Punakha; rafting trips are organized by adventure tour companies in Thimphu or Punakha, typically running from March to May and October to November.

Notes. Water levels fluctuate significantly; always raft with a certified guide as river currents can be unpredictable.

  • Phobjikha Valley

    Wangdue Phodrang District

The Phobjikha Valley offers a serene yet breathtaking backdrop for paragliding, providing sweeping views of the glacial valley and the famous Gangtey Monastery. It is one of the few places in Bhutan where the open, high-altitude landscape allows for spectacular tandem flights.

Access. Accessible by road from Punakha or Thimphu; tandem flights are operated by local adventure specialists based in the valley during the clear autumn and spring months.

Notes. Weather-dependent; flights are strictly regulated by the Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority and require advance booking through licensed tour operators.
